Dr Austin Sammut joined the firm as a partner following the merger between Fenech Farrugia Fiott Legal and Ganado Sammut Advocates in May 2011. He read for a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and economics and then for a Doctorate in Law at the University of Malta, obtaining his warrant to practice as an advocate in 1982.Whilst with Ganado Sammut Advocates, he held the role of Managing Partner and after a number of years heavily involved in litigation work, he became more and more occupied with his non-court, commercial law practice. His areas of specialisation are litigation and alternative dispute resolution, intellectual property, real estate law and property financing, immigration and residency, European law, media law and sport law.
Dr. Sammut is an accredited mediator with the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) of the U.K. He has also received intensive training at the Singapore Mediation Centre. Austin Sammut is a member of MARQUES, the Association of European Trademark Owners. He is a lecturer and examiner in law at the University of Malta and is also active as a journalist, being the Malta correspondent of the The Times (London) and the British Broadcasting Corporation, and has served as the first Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board of The Malta Independent. He has served as Chairman of Public Broadcasting Services Limited, the public broadcasting network in Malta, as a member of the Malta Broadcasting Authority and as the first Chairman of Posta Limited (now Maltapost plc).
Austin Sammut is Honorary Consul of Portugal in Malta, an Honorary Member of the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic and Honorary President of the Malta national Aquatic Sports Association. He is married to Rita Ganado, a Notary Public, and has three sons.
